Gran Paradiso, from Valsavarenche, is one of the most sought-after peaks by mountaineers from all over the world. You will sleep at the Vittorio Emanuele II refuge or the Chabod refuge and in two days of acclimatization you will reach the summit of 4061m.
Gran Paradiso was climbed for the first time in 1860 and together with Monte Rosa it is the ideal peak for all-round mountaineering training.
Under the supervision of an Alpine Guide you will learn rope techniques and maneuvers on glacial terrain and you will be accompanied by mountain professionals towards an objective coveted by many, surrounded by the beauty of the protected area of the Gran Paradiso National Park.

Schedule

The following program may be subject to change at the sole discretion of the Mountain Guide for reasons of weather, conditions of the participants and safety of the glacier.

DAY 1
Meeting at Pont Valsavarenche, parking at the end of the closed road (to go up to the Vittorio Emanuele II refuge) or at the Chabod refuge car park (to go up to the Chabod refuge).
Presentations and ascent to the refuge Vittorio Emanuele (2735m) / Chabod (2710m).
Easy trekking, on hiking terrain
(about 2h30, 775m altitude difference for Vittorio Emanuele II, 890m for Chabod)
Overnight stay at the refuge with dinner.
(Possibility of appointment directly at the refuge, depending on the instructions provided by the guide)

The refuge, time and meeting place will be indicated by the Mountain Guide,
depending on the weather conditions of the day.
Normally meeting after lunch, or in any case to arrive in time for dinner in the refuge at 7pm.

DAY 2
Wake up early to look for optimal climbing conditions on the glacier.
Breakfast (around 4, based on guide directions and day conditions),
approach and formation of the team.
The climb on the glacier towards the summit of Gran Paradiso (4061m) begins.
For the descent, follow the uphill itinerary in reverse, down to the valley’s car park.

Difference in altitude from the refuge to the Gran Paradiso summit is approximately 1350m
Ascent/descent time approximately 10-11h

WHAT TECHNICAL-MOUNTAINEERING SKILLS ARE NECESSARY TO PARTICIPATE?

In 2 days and progressively you will understand the basic techniques of forming a roped party and progression in a glacial environment. You will learn to use an ice ax and crampons and how to coordinate with your climbing partners.
No previous experience is required, just good physical training and the habit of walking in the mountains.
The climb is reserved for adults only; minors only if accompanied by parents and/or legal guardians.

I DON'T KNOW IF I'M TRAINED OR IN FIT ENOUGH FOR THIS EVENT

Obviously good physical shape allows you to progress faster.
Progression above 4000m is more tiring than at low altitude, this is due to the lack of oxygen.
If you have mountain experience even in the summer season and can do trekking with more than 1500m of positive altitude difference without being too tired, you can participate.
The climb is reserved for adults only; minors only if accompanied by parents and/or legal guardians.

WHAT EXACTLY DOES THE FEE INCLUDE?

The registration fee includes:

– Accompaniment of the mountain guide.
– Use of common equipment: carabiners, ropes, insurers, etc.
– Membership in the Adventure Dreamers group in your region, being able to participate in free self-organised activities of our members throughout the year. However, it does not include the night and half board in the personal and guide’s refuge (we have already booked the refuge) whose prices are indicated above. Travel to the climbing location, personal equipment and/or anything not listed under “the price includes”

WHERE DOES THE EVENT TAKE PLACE?

The event will take place in Valsavarenche. Meeting point in Pont (if you will be staying at the Vittorio Emanuele Refuge) or at the Chabod Refuge car park, located just before in the valley (the choice varies based on the availability of the refuges on certain dates)

HOW DO YOU GET TO THE PLACE WHERE THE EVENT TAKES PLACE?

The climb takes place inside the Gran Paradiso Park.
A WhatsApp group will be created for the participants, about a week before, where they can organize themselves independently with any shared cars, so as to split travel costs and limit their ecological footprint.

The appointment can take place at the parking lot of the Pont campsite, Valsavarenche, around 1/2pm.

N.B.: Sometimes the guide will wait for customers directly at the refuge (in this case you will have the details for the easy signposted and hiking trek to the refuge, unaccompanied)
The WhatsApp group will be created about a week before the event! The Mountain Guide will indicate, on the WhatsApp group, the meeting time on day 1 only 2/3 days before the climb, based on the weather conditions (not predictable well in advance).

WHAT ARE THE TIMETABLES?

Appointment around lunch time (in case the guide will leave with you by car); or in the refuge before 6pm (in case the guide will receive you directly at the refuge). At 7pm dinner will be served in the refuge The WhatsApp group will be created about a week before the event! The Alpine Guide will indicate, on the WhatsApp group, the meeting time on day 1 only 2/3 days before the climb, based on the weather conditions (not predictable well in advance).
On the morning of day 2 the wake-up call will be around 4am. The climb will be tackled at first light (frontal light is essential) so as to guarantee greater safety and stability of the glacier. You will return to the car from early afternoon until mid-afternoon (depending on the speed of ascent and descent of the group).

IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER?

In case of bad weather predicted by the guide the event will be canceled. If the guide decides to confirm the event because he considers a high success rate and sufficient safety conditions with respect to the weather, the cost of the event will not be refundable. No refunds will be given if a member of the group is unable to reach the summit or if the guide decides to descend due to reasons due to the group’s abilities or the weather.

WHAT SHOULD I HAVE AND BRING WITH ME DURING THE EVENT?

Winter mountain clothing, “onion” clothing is recommended, i.e. with various layers to be adjusted based on the temperature:
– thermal underwear
– pail or soft shell type layer – waterproof shell + warm down jacket or similar
– Trousers in soft-shell or goretex shell or similar
– Hat or headband
– two pairs of snow gloves (one warm and one lighter and more sensitive)
– fog mask and sunglasses
– UV rays protective cream
– Frontal (only for the ascent in two days)
– Backpack 30/40 LT
– Sheet bag (only for the two-day climb)
– Telescopic poles (optional but very useful)
– Waterproof, rigid, high-ankle mountain boots (boots for universal crampons are also fine)

CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS

• BAD WEATHER: The decision regarding the cancellation of an excursion lies with the mountain guide. The mountain guide will evaluate the feasibility of the climb each time. In case of cancellation there will be no refund but a lesson will be held in a sheltered environment. Usually the dawn is stable in the mountains, to guarantee the success of the internship, the times may be changed • FAILURE TO PARTICIPATE: if you are unable to participate due to personal reasons it will not be possible to receive a refund.
• FAILURE TO REACH THE MINIMUM NUMBER: if the group of participants does not reach the minimum number, you will be entitled to a refund or you can use the fee for any other event. It’s your choice!
• FAILURE TO REACH A PEAK: in case of failure to reach a peak foreseen in the program, no refund will be provided. • INAPPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT: it is not possible to receive a refund if you do not have the mandatory technical equipment and/or unsuitable clothing. In this case the guide may decide not to let you participate in the climb • OTHER CAUSES: for any other cause of cancellation on our part you are entitled to a refund.
• COVID OR OTHER ILLNESSES/INJURIES: there is no refund due to COVID, various injuries or other illnesses. No refunds will be given if a member of the group is unable to reach the summit or if the guide decides to descend due to reasons due to the group’s abilities or the weather. The group agrees to respect the unquestionable judgment of the Alpine Guide and that nothing is owed by the organization.
